Walk and Talk Therapy
Walk-and-talk therapy, moves therapeutic sessions outside into nature. Sessions are conducted while walking local trails in Stanley Park, Kitsilano Beach in Vancouver or at Rocky Point Park in Port Moody. These are not intended to be "workouts". The pace is gentle and set by you. This approach adds additional benefits to overall wellbeing by incorporating fresh air and physical activity into the therapeutic process.
Benefits
Stress Reduction and Relaxation
Natural environments promote a sense of calm, that can help you feel more comfortable and open during therapy sessions. Inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing”, this approach has been used by doctors in Japan to encourage their patients to take a break from the hectic pace of urban life. Spending time in nature has been shown to lower cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone, fostering relaxation and reducing anxiety.
Boosted Creativity and Mindfulness
Engaging with nature fosters creativity and broadens perspectives. The beauty and complexity of natural settings can inspire new insights, paralleling your emotional and mental journey. This shift in environment often helps individuals overcome mental blocks and discover fresh solutions to their challenges.
Enhanced Cognitive Functioning
Being outdoors has been linked to improved cognitive functions like memory, attention, and focus. This mental clarity can lead to more productive therapy sessions, where you can find it easier to engage, reflect, and process emotions.
Improved Physical Wellbeing
Walk-and-talk therapy naturally incorporates light physical activity, which can boost mood and improve overall health and wellbeing. Movement triggers the release of endorphins—our body’s natural mood enhancers—which can be especially beneficial for those dealing with depression or anxiety.
Reduced Social Intensity
Walking side-by-side during therapy reduces the intensity of direct face-to-face interactions, which can be particularly helpful for clients who find traditional office settings intimidating or overly formal. This relaxed dynamic approach encourages more open communication.
Sensory Engagement
Nature stimulates all of the senses—sight, sound, touch, and smell—which can help ground you in the present moment. This sensory immersion provides a refreshing contrast to the overstimulation many of us deal with in urban and digital environments.
